Can meditation set me free from addictions?

Transcript of answer

It is expedient that we remember that “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. Capable of dividing asunder bone from marrow, soul from spirit.”

We are not reading a text that is just words spoken by empty people, but we are reading a text that has a spirit behind them – and there is something we would talk about extensively as we go forward, that whenever we read any book, not just the Bible, there is a Spirit from which that book was produced and same applies to movies, music and all kinds of art.

The moment you engage it, you are not just engaging it but the spirit that produced it.

In meditating on any written work, audio work or painted work, you are opening your soul to the spirit behind the creation. Now, if the spirit of Christ is the spirit of liberty, by meditating on the freedom you have in Christ Jesus, you are exposing yourself and your soul to the spirit behind that written word.

That is, however, the first step. I think I spoke about this in an answer I gave to a question on Monday that it is not enough to expose yourself to the word of God and meditate upon it, there has to be a physical action upon the earth that will be a channel through which that word can be made manifest.

So, we don’t just meditate on the word of God but put it into practice and activity. That is how we let it be on earth even as it is in heaven. In doing so, that life can tabernacle with us. If I speak in a biblical language I will say “That is how the word becomes flesh in our lives”. That which we have perceived and cognised in spirit takes on physical manifestation in our lives through our actions.

Beyond that, it is not enough to meditate on the word of God and begin to practise, but we also have to disconnect from anything that feeds the wrong aspects of ourselves. If I am dealing with drugs, lust or anger, it is not wise to consume materials or spend time hanging around people who are portals for such spirits. The company you keep (physically or virtually), has a profound impact on your spiritual health. That is something we have to be mindful of.

You have to begin to identify in your environments (physically or virtually) things that are feeding these addictions. If someone likes money too much and all the movies you watch as well as friends around you are about money, you cannot break that addiction (even if you meditate on the word of God). Why? Because your environment does not support the journey you are on.

So there is a place where we take inventory of the environment we are exposed to and make the necessary changes.

  1. Meditating on the word of God
  2. Prayer – because we are bringing down a strength greater than ours (it is by the grace of God we can break free from the reigns of the flesh).
  3. Your prayer must be completed with your actions. That is when the life from the prayer can tabernacle in your life
  4. Then be mindful of your environment and what you allow your soul to feed on

If you put these things to practice, deliverance shall be your portion. You must be intentional and understand that the deliverance we enter into, we are a part of. God helps us but we are the ones to get up and do it.

God bless you.
