From Module 1, meditation was defined as being steadfast, consistent, and resolute towards a thing and that it can both be negative and positive; it went on to give examples of other creatures and their meditative habits/lifestyle.

My question is: Is it possible then to be 'meditative' on more than one thing at a time/in a season?

Transcript of answer

Yes! It is possible but we must, however, have a hierarchy of priorities in the natural order and sequence that they follow.

A simple example: on a particular day, I have “non-negotiables” (things that I must give my attention to). I have my physical health and well-being in the form of showering, brushing my teeth, grooming, etc. I have my wife and child, I have God, my spiritual health, and I have work. All of these things I am meditating on simultaneously but there is a hierarchy of priorities. Based on the hierarchy, I know which one I will start first. Remember that I said, “hierarchy of priorities and natural order and sequence that they follow?”.

So when I wake up in the morning, there is something I do first based on my hierarchy of priorities and after that, I do the next one and so on. We all need to have a proper hierarchy of priorities and live according to that hierarchy.

So if you say that God is at the top of your priorities but you start your day and the first six hours are spent on Netflix, then it is clear that God is not really at the top of the hierarchy of your priorities (it’s just something you say to feel good about yourself). A time might come when your house catches fire and normally, you will brush, take your child to school and so on. You will have to push everything aside and what must take your full attention is to ensure that no life is lost and to get some valuable properties out of the house and call the fire department.

So, yeah, you can have more than one thing you are meditating on at a time but you must have a hierarchy of priorities. This way, you don’t waste the best of your time doing something that gives a tiny yield for you, especially when it collects so much in return.

For example, in a season of your life where you have a ministry, career, charity work, or a wedding you are planning, you have to focus on all these things because they are all important, but you will have to put them in a hierarchy list. Based on that hierarchy, you will engage them in their natural sequence and order so long as you know that an emergency happens and you will give each one the time it deserves.

When engaging any of them, you want to give yourself fully to it. So, in the time that you are working on ministry stuff, you are not thinking about work so much (you are giving your heart here). When you get to work, your mind is not on ministry this or that and so on. It will be easy to do all these because you have given every one of them the necessary attention.

You must give yourself fully when engaging in a particular thing, even if it is for 10 seconds and in those 10 seconds, the fullness of your being must be there. And when you have completed that task, you transfer it to something else. As I am answering your question, I am not thinking of my food on the table or my son; the few minutes that I am answering this question, my attention is on you, and when I finish it, I will take that attention and put it elsewhere.

This is how we can do things and have a natural sequence that will enable us to be productive. I hope this has answered your question.
