Hi, Rabbi. Please, could you throw more light on the difference between meditating, visualisation, and maladaptive daydreaming?

I used to be a fan of visualisation, but when I came across an article on maladaptive daydreaming, I stopped because I thought I was doing something wrong.

Transcript of answer

Precious, my dear, not to worry. These are things that we're going to explore in depth along the way.

Let me start by saying that what a person is unable to see, a person is unable to enter into. And that's why God is always in the business of giving people a picture of what he's trying to get them into. You see, if Christ had not come into the world and let men see what a man can be like, it would not have been possible for anyone to enter into that same reality that Christ entered into.

You see, we as human beings are not guided by words so much as we are guided by images. Yes, mommy can say, "don't lie, don't steal, don't dance like this," but if mommy is lying, daddy is stealing, and everybody is dancing like this, that image that has been presented to the child is exactly what they are going to emulate because, on a subconscious level, we as human beings communicate via the medium of images.

So when we talk about maladaptive daydreaming, look at the word there, mal. The word mal is Latin for something unwell, you see. When you say normal, normal means I am not unwell. So when you talk about maladaptive daydreaming, it talks about the usage of your image sensorium in a way that is unhealthy, right? When you are sitting down and your imagination, which is used to inspire hope, inspiration, strength, and courage, you start to use it to escape reality; you start to use it to fuel your fears and bitterness and all these kinds of things. This is when we consider the imagination being abused.

God gave us the imagination for a reason, and we're supposed to use it in a very intentional way. Are you following? Where, for example, before the close of my day, I'll sit down, ha, and I'll contemplate a man like Peter: how did he go from a coward to a person who was willing to die for the sake of the gospel?

These are the kinds of things that are worthy of meditation. Where I sit down and I paint the picture in my heart, and I contemplate it. I fill myself with images of God, and I say, Father, make me into this thing, oh God, and you, you, then your imagination becomes an intentional weapon to launch you into destiny. These are things that we're going to talk about a lot, you see.

The imagination is good, but just like any good thing, when used in the wrong way, it becomes very bad. Water is good for you, but there are some places in your body where if water enters, your body is going to die; you get my point. So everything has its use. The question is, are we using the right way? Are we using the wrong way?

So don't worry. Visualization, imagination, and meditation are all things that we are going to talk about very well. I can't fully answer your question in a few minutes, do you understand? But I will tell you that your imagination is a very important faculty in your spiritual work. And that's why the Bible is filled with stories that have an intention of impregnating your imagination with possibilities in God for your contemplation. Are you following me?

And there's a part in practice where you sit down for 10 minutes, and today I'm just going to sit down. The Bible says David remembered God in the night watches. He said I meditate on you in the night watches. While many of us at night, at 2 a.m., are opening TikTok, David was contemplating the wonders of God. Why wouldn't he write the way he did? Why wouldn't he have the strength that he did? Because those images are not just, hallelujah. We will talk about a lot in the coming days.

The imagination is good. All right? But good things can be abused. So I'm going to teach about the right use of this faculty called imagination. It is well with you, my dear.
